Julio Teheran

Julio Teheran, the veteran right-hander, has been given a short leash by the New York Mets. Following a single disappointing start, the Mets have made the decision to designate Teheran for assignment.

Teheran, 33, was signed by the Mets last week, stepping in to fill the void left by starting pitcher Tylor Megill who was moved to the injured list due to a shoulder strain. However, Teheran’s first outing for the Mets was far from impressive. In the Mets’ victory against the Braves on Monday night, Teheran allowed four runs on six hits and a pair of walks in just 2 2/3 innings.

“It appears to be one-and-done for Julio Teheran.”

In response to Teheran’s poor performance, the Mets made the move to call up right-hander Dedniel Núñez from Triple-A Syracuse.

Teheran, a two-time All-Star with the Braves, found himself as a free agent after spending the spring training with the Orioles. Last year, he appeared in 14 games (11 starts) for the Brewers, pitching to a 4.40 ERA in 71 2/3 innings.

The Mets have the option to recall Jose Butto as early as Friday, and there’s a chance he could take Teheran’s spot in the rotation for the Saturday game against the Royals.

Butto, 26, started the second game of a doubleheader last Thursday against the Tigers, giving up one run on three hits and three walks in six innings with six strikeouts.
