New law makes it easier for foreign doctors to practice in Florida

Law SB 7016, recently approved in this southern US state, allows doctors and other health professionals to practice their profession by exempting them from some of the requirements required until now.

A law passed in the state of Florida allows medical professionals who graduate abroad to practice in the health care field, without completing the medical residency requirement.

The SB 7016 law, known as “Live Healthy” and which was signed by Republican Governor Ron DeSantis in March, represents strong support for immigrant doctors and health professionals.

The rules could make it easier for these health professionals to skip the now-mandatory requirement of a minimum three-year medical residency.

“People had to go to the island of Puerto Rico to do an internship for a year so that they could fulfill their requirement with that internship and then they were able to complete and pass all the exams,” Colombian neurologist Laureano Chilietta told the Voice. May it happen.” He is in favor of American law.

Meanwhile, Governor DeSantis believes this is a favorable move for workforce growth in the state.

“And that will help us expand and do what we need to do to have a great health care workforce… which is a great thing and a growing state will need it. “We’re talking about deprived areas, you’re talking about low-income areas,” the Republican politician said.

To date, many foreign doctors have had to re-study to practice in Florida… However, Chilluit, who has advocated for this law since 2005, clarifies that the move to practice will not be automatic.

“But it’s not free, it’s not like they believe the law has come, it’s come out, where do I sign this and where do I get my diploma… No, you have to make an education plan, You have to complete exams,” he explained.

According to Governor DeSantis, this proposal was strengthened by the shortage of health experts in the state during the pandemic.

“They are not going to give it to us because we are good people, very loving and we come from a country that needs help, no. They give it to us because Florida needs it, period, and what does Florida need? Labor”.

The rule, among other requirements, establishes the practice of medicine in Florida for four years before applying for a license.

According to official figures, about 34% of health professionals in the state are above 60 years of age, leaving them only a few years away from their retirement.

Upon passage into law, State Senate President Kathleen Passidomo praised the benefits it would bring, as it “increases workforce mobility and allows Florida-trained health care workers to provide services in essential areas such as mental health, childbirth and Encourages people to help Floridians with disabilities.”
