Mets 05-4-2024

The Mets were in a comfortable lead against the Tigers, with a three-run advantage. However, things took a turn for the worse when the Tigers managed to secure a 6-3 win in the 11th innings. This marked the Mets’ fifth consecutive loss, a disappointing record that hasn’t been seen since 2005.

Adam Ottavino, one of the Mets’ key players, gave up a game-tying home run to Riley Greene during the eighth inning. The Mets had a golden opportunity to turn things around during the ninth inning. Still, Francisco Alvarez, unfortunately, hit into an inning-ending double play, squandering the chance.

The Mets’ bullpen faltered again in the 11th inning, with Michael Tonkin allowing a go-ahead RBI double to Colt Keith. This gave Detroit their first lead of the day, followed by a two-run single to ex-Yankee Gio Urshela. Despite a strong start, the Mets didn’t manage to answer back in the bottom of the inning.

The offense, which did not manage to secure a hit after the fifth inning, was another key area of struggle for the Mets during the game. Francisco Lindor managed to draw a two-out walk to bring the tying run to the plate, but Pete Alonso struck out, ending the game.

Despite the disappointing outcome, the game had some positive aspects for the Mets. The team led 3-0 heading into the sixth inning, and Detroit only managed to tie the game with runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. Edwin Diaz performed well, tossing a scoreless top of the ninth.

The schedule ahead is challenging for the Mets, with 15 games lined up in 14 days. The team will need to regroup and refocus if they hope to turn their season around.

New manager Carlos Mendoza was candid about the team’s challenging start, stating, “Not the way I anticipated, to be honest with you. We’ve been through a lot, especially in the first series… You’ve just got to keep going, prepare and lean on the guys and coaches. We’ll get through it.”
