Meningitis

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recently raised an alarm, warning healthcare providers about a surge in a rare bacterial disease that can lead to meningitis, and in severe cases, death.

In a recent report, the CDC has noticed an upsurge in a specific type of invasive meningococcal disease, which is predominantly caused by a particular strain of bacteria.

The CDC warns of a surge in a rare bacterial disease that can lead to meningitis, and in severe cases, death.

The total number of reported cases in the U.S. in the previous year amounted to 422, marking the highest yearly count since 2014. The first few months of the current year have already seen 143 reported cases, suggesting that this year might surpass the previous one.

The disease seems to be affecting a specific demographic more than others. Adults aged between 30 and 60, particularly those of African descent and those living with HIV, appear to be more susceptible to this bacterial disease.

The bacteria causing the disease can lead to a severe infection in the bloodstream, resulting in symptoms like chills, fatigue, rapid breathing, cold hands and feet, and diarrhea. In advanced stages, a dark purple rash may also appear on the skin.

The infection can have severe consequences even for those who survive. Some survivors may suffer from long-term health issues like deafness or limb amputations.

The infection can be treated with antibiotics. However, early detection and prompt treatment are crucial, as an estimated 10% to 15% of infected people do not survive.

Vaccines against meningococcal disease are available and recommended by health officials. All children should ideally receive a meningococcal conjugate vaccine, which safeguards against the current strain, around the time they start middle school. Due to the fading protection offered by the vaccine, a booster dose is also recommended at the age of 16.

In light of the current situation, the CDC recommends additional vaccinations for people at heightened risk, such as those residing in areas experiencing an outbreak or individuals with HIV infection or certain other health conditions.
