Melissa McCarthy, at the Broadway premiere of “Suffs,” expressed her disconcertment at the unceasing criticism Meghan Markle seems to face.
“The unnecessary hostility towards any individual, especially women, is something that deeply saddens me,” McCarthy stated.
She, like many others, is confounded at the uncalled-for hate that the former “Suits” actress has been subjected to. McCarthy’s strong words underscore a much-needed call for empathy and understanding in an increasingly hostile public sphere.
Melissa McCarthy further elaborated on her thoughts regarding the public’s perception of Meghan Markle.
“A woman who is intelligent, engaging, and independent can be intimidating to some,” shared the 53-year-old actress.
This comment points towards a deeper societal issue: the irrational fear of powerful women. If a woman like Markle, who has achieved undeniable success in her own right, can be vilified for simply living her life, then what message does this send to other ambitious women?
McCarthy’s professional relationship with Markle began in 2021 when the two collaborated on a video to commemorate Markle’s 40th birthday and the launch of her mentorship initiative 40×40.
“Working with Meghan was a delightful experience. She is an absolute gem of a person,” McCarthy gushed.
This encounter seems to have only increased McCarthy’s admiration for Markle, as she spoke highly of her co-star and praised her for carving out her own path.
Melissa McCarthy’s recent public appearance was at the Broadway opening of the musical “Suffs.” The show is a tribute to the women’s suffrage movement, highlighting the pivotal events that led to the 19th amendment of the United States Constitution, which granted women the right to vote.
“Being part of this musical was an enlightening experience,” McCarthy shared.
Post her involvement in “Suffs,” McCarthy embarked on a journey of learning about the key women in the suffrage movement, including Alice Paul, Inez Milholland, Ida B. Wells, and Ruza Wenclawska.
“I realized that there’s so much more to women’s history that I need to know. It’s been a humbling experience,” McCarthy confessed.
Her newfound knowledge seems to have instilled in her a greater appreciation for the women who paved the way for her and her daughters’ rights.
