Court declares unconstitutional norm on trial period

The Constitutional Court declared unconstitutional the provision of the Labor Code that extended the trial period to 180 days for workers looking for their first job who had previously been hired on a fixed term basis for at least 90 days. The known judgment considered a request for a declaration of unconstitutionality on some norms of the Labor Code, made by 35 deputies of BE, PCP and PEV in September 2019. The Court decided to declare the unconstitutionality, with general mandatory force, of the rule that established the probationary period extended to 180 days, in the part that refers to workers who are looking for their first job, when applicable to workers who have previously been hired, with term, for a period equal to or greater ...

Government wants to evaluate measures to concentrate working time in the week

Government and social partners should consider measures to concentrate working time in the week or reduce working periods when productivity increases, according to the new version of the Green Paper on the Future of Work. According to the new version of the document, which was put up for public discussion this week, the authors argue that the Government should “consider, with the social partners, horizons that allow for a greater concentration of working time in the week in the future, or without loss of workers' income, the reduction of working hours, namely in the context of increases in productivity, in conjunction with collective bargaining and in specific sectorial realities”. This is one of the new lines of reflection for public polic...

Labor Authority inspectors reach historic maximum number

Minister Ana Mendes Godinho announced that the Government signed an order this Wednesday to increase the workforce of the Authority for Working Conditions (ACT) by 50, reaching a historical maximum of 493. This announcement was made by the Minister of Labor and Social Security in the Assembly of the Republic, during a challenge to the Government requested by the PCP on the theme "Defense of workers' rights". Following a very critical intervention by the Government given by the PCP's secretary general, Jerónimo de Sousa, Ana Mendes Godinho sought to defend the thesis that there have been advances in the country since 2015 in the working conditions of workers, highlighting the annual increases in the minimum wage, but also emergency responses...

Trip to the nervous system of the Wanda Metropolitano

René Abril joined Atlético de Madrid out of sheer rebellion. He thought that someone should be contrary to his friends, those who filled the streets with Madrid's jerseys on teenage soccer afternoons. The same rebellion with which he completed, in 1999, the demanding career of technical engineer in telecommunications at the Polytechnic University of Madrid. A title that would allow him, 17 years later, to defend the colors of his team, no longer in the square, but in one of the most important stadiums in the world, in LaLiga Santander, and in front of thousands of rojiblancas jerseys. In 2016, April became the first CTO of his Atleti with the mission of designing the technological structure of the new Wanda Metropolitano. "If you take an engineer to his team's stadium, in his city ......

Physicists Have Caught Electron Orbits in an Exciton Quasiparticle For The First Time

There's been a fabulous new achievement in particle physics. For the first time, scientists have managed to image the orbits of electrons within a quasiparticle known as an exciton - a result that has allowed them to finally measure the excitonic wave function describing the spatial distribution of electron momentum within the quasiparticle.  This achievement has been sought since the discovery of excitons in the 1930s, and while it may sound abstract at first, it could help in the development of various technologies, including quantum tech applications."Excitons are really unique and interesting particles; they are electrically neutral which means they behave very differently within materials from other particles like electrons. Their presence can really change the way a material responds...
