We Just Got Unprecedented New Images of Supermassive Black Hole M87*

Telescopes from across the globe have teamed up to take unprecedented images of supermassive black hole M87* as it blasts matter into space at 99 percent the speed of light. This is the same famous black hole that was captured by the Event Horizon Telescope and unveiled in 2019.  That first release was a spectacular achievement. It took many years of work, and an array of radio telescopes that spanned the entire globe, combining their observations to image a region of space not much bigger than the Solar System from 55 million light-years away. Now a team of scientists has added data from more telescopes across multiple wavelengths of light, each of which reveals different characteristics of the black hole M87* and the relativistic plasma jet it's blasting into space."We knew that the first...

Does photo show a rainbow on Mars? NASA answers the mystery

Over the weekend, the Perseverance rover captured what appeared to be a stunning rainbow shooting across the Martian horizon. Now, NASA is debunking that theory. Rainbows, which require both sunlight and raindrops, are not possible in the cold, thin Marian atmosphere — so what explanation is there for the spectacular image? Is it a "dustbow?" Is it an "icebow?"  NASA's Mars Perseverance rover acquired this image of the area in back of it using its onboard Rear Left Hazard Avoidance Camera. This image was acquired on Apr. 4, 2021 (Sol 43) at the local mean solar time of 15:14:09.  NASA/JPL-Caltech After several days of online speculation by thousands of people, NASA decided to re...

NASA's New Mars Rover Just Took One of The Sweetest Extraterrestrial Selfies Ever

Perseverance hasn't even been on Mars for two months, and already the latest in red planet rovers is picking up some of Curiosity's excellent habits. No, not science; well, at least not just science. Percy is proving just as adept as her predecessor at snapping brilliant selfies, as the most recently sent images show.  As the rover settles into its new home in the Jezero Crater, it's been sending back images of its surroundings, including parts of itself. We're still waiting for a full-body pic, but on April 6, using the SHERLOC WATSON camera attached to its robotic arm, Perseverance took images of its 'head' and 'face'."Oh hey... didn't see you there..." (NASA/JPL-Caltech)In official terms, this is the mast, on top of which is mounted cameras the rover uses to image Mars. The large round o...
