Friday June 11, Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Jn 19, 31-37)

The preface to the Sacred Heart offers us a spiritual commentary on the Gospel: “In his immense love, when he was lifted up on the cross, he offered himself for us; and, from his pierced side, letting blood and water flow, he gave birth to the sacraments of the Church, so that all men, drawn to his heart, may come and draw joy from the living sources of salvation. "The feast of the Sacred Heart therefore has a centripetal dimension which brings us back to the infinite mercy of the Father, of whom Jesus Christ is the source. The book of Hosea thus gives the word to the Lord: “Yes, I loved Israel from childhood (…). I guided him with humanity, by bonds of love. " And this almost maternal love, when it is rejected, does not turn into anger. The holy god "Do not come to e...

June ‘Batch cooking’: cook one afternoon and eat all week

The days get longer and the temperatures rise, a sign that summer is showing its paw, and with it a lot of vegetables, fruits and seasonal foods full of color, flavor and the freshness that the season calls for. There are still strawberries, cherries are sparkling, melons and watermelons are coming onto the pitch, and the beans are glorious. ‘Hot cross buns’: strawberry stuffed cross buns

Any similarity of these hot cross buns strawberry with the originals is mere coincidence. That said, no one kills me because there are no spices like cascoporro here (which there are also). There aren't a ton of raisins inside your brioche dough either, but that doesn't stop you from discovering a heart of wonderful braised strawberries -or strawberries-; and more now that they begin to appear in seasonal orchards. Actually, these scones originating in England are typical of Easter; Its most recognizable characteristic - in addition to those mentioned in the previous paragraph - is that white cross that appears above each one; while they cook in the oven all together in a mold, making each ball of dough stick to the other. Why a cross? It is a Catholic tradition of Good Friday, and...

May ‘batch cooking’: cook one afternoon and eat all week

May is the hinge month par excellence, that time of year when spring already flirts with summer but can still remind us that it was not so long ago it was winter, so you have to leave home prepared for any scenario. The last artichokes also frolic with the first cherries, the avocados and broccoli leave and the nectarines appear, the pea heads to the bench after playing all season while the tomatoes heat up to come out, and we think how to cook them all during a late to be able to dedicate the rest of the week to other tasks. As we suggested last month with the salmon, we can prepare the broth for the corvina soup with its bones and its head, and freeze what is left over - if the corvina is large it can be used several times - for other preparations. After making the stock, we can dedicat...

The penultimate polls: no spins since Friday and about to be banned

Good Morning! Today I am writing to you with news about the elections in Madrid and their polls. The first thing: we have published a Metroscopy survey with interviews until this very Monday. According to that survey, right now the seats would be distributed more or less like this: PP 59, PSOE 28, Más Madrid 25, Vox 13 and Unidos Podemos 11. In my analysis of the data, I highlight three main keys: (1) the right continues with an advantage, (2) More Madrid continues to rise in the campaign and (3) surprises are still possible. The Metroscopia survey places the sum of PP and Vox at 51% of the vote and leaves about 45% to the left. Those three points of difference give the majority to the right, which would be around 72 seats (three more than necessary for an absolute majority). It's a f...

NASA Delays Ingenuity's First Flight on Mars Due to Test-Spin Alert

NASA has delayed the first flight of its Ingenuity Mars helicopter after a crucial test-spin of the drone's rotor blades abruptly stopped. This was the last major test to make sure the helicopter would be ready for its first flight, which was originally scheduled for early Monday.  Now NASA has delayed the historic liftoff — which would mark the first powered, controlled flight on another planet – to Wednesday. For the test on Friday, Ingenuity was supposed to spin its blades at full speed while on the ground. The two pairs of blades should have spun in opposite directions at more than 2,500 rotations per minute – about eight times faster than an Earth helicopter. On flight day, they'll need that speed to lift the 4-pound drone into the thin Martian atmosphere. That air has just 1 percent the ...
