Bigger changes to come by 2024/2025

The 2024/2025 season will have an important change, because the competition and development will be changed. The eight groups with four teams each disappear, as now it will become a single group.

This group will be made up of 36 clubs, not the 32 that currently exist. Although the first intention is for each one to play 10 games against randomly selected rivals, in the end the decision was made to play eight games, four at home and four away in the 10 European weeks that have been planned.

Likewise, the extra places will not be by invitation based on the historical ranking, they will be distributed by sporting merits: one for the club that has finished third in the association in 5th place by UEFA and another will be for a national champion. , There will be five teams that will qualify with the “Route of Champions”:

Regarding the two remaining places, they will be for the associations that have had a better collective performance by the clubs the previous season for the squad that is positioned behind the qualifying positions for the Champions League.

For Qualifying for the round of 16 will be achieved directly for the teams located between 1st and 8th place. From 9th to 24th they will play a round-trip tiebreaker to get their place in the next one.

All of this seeks balance and more competitiveness and income generation to be distributed among clubs, leagues and grassroots football throughout the continent, at the same time that they will be much more attractive competitions.

The changes will not only occur in the Champions League. The Europa League and the Conference League are going to undergo modifications, since there will be four more places until there are 36 clubs. Some modifications that we hope will have a positive effect in both competitions.
