A pool of unknown liquid in an underground car park in the Pempelfort district of Düsseldorf caused four residents to feel unwell and cough. After the incident on Friday evening, a respiratory protection team took different measurements to identify the substance, as the fire brigade announced. However, it was not possible to determine exactly what substance the aqueous solution was.
Several residents of the apartment building had previously reported an unpleasant and acrid smell in the garage area to the fire brigade. According to the information, the four injured people were previously in the underground car park before complaining about the symptoms. They were taken to the hospital by ambulance. In the meantime, forces from the fire, rescue and environmental guards cordoned off the area and took initial measurements.
The liquid was sprinkled with a chemical binder and tightly packed. Finally, the fire brigade ventilated the affected area with two high-performance fans.
