Sacyr will build the Messina Bridge after almost two decades of waiting

Sacyr is getting closer to being able to resume one of the most emblematic works in Europe that has, however, been suspended for almost two decades. The Government of Italy approved last Thursday a decree to reactivate the construction project of a bridge in the Strait of Messina to join the peninsula with the island of Sicily, which would make it the longest in the world with 3.2 kilometers long. length.

The Spanish construction company is part of the consortium that was awarded the contract for the execution of the infrastructure back in 2005, but it could never be carried out due to changes in the Government. Now, the Executive of Giorgia Meloni has fulfilled his promise to promote the project and, for this, he has the same alliance of companies that he already won 18 years ago, headed by the Italian Webuild -formerly Salini Impregilo-.

Through the decree, the Transalpine Government reactivates an already existing company, Stretto di Messina (Strait of Messina), in charge of promoting and directing the project for the bridge over the Strait of Messina and which will now have the majority participation of the Ministry of Economy and that of Transport, together with the regions of Sicily and Calabria. In addition, the decree also rehabilitates the previous contract of the Stretto di Messina company with the Eurolink construction consortium, led by the Italian Webuild with 45% and with the participation of Sacyr Ingenieríae Infraestructuras, with 18.7%.

Now begins a phase of redefinition of the construction project and its financial scheme. At the time, the estimated investment for this initiative exceeded 3,800 million euros. Although the relaunch of the project is still in a very initial phase, it has the firm decision of the Government to carry it out, as demonstrated by the decrees approved. The infrastructure will mean, in the opinion of the Minister of Infrastructure, Matteo Salvini, a “growth engine” for southern Italy and a “major tourist attraction.”

Sacyr has one of its main markets in Italy, acting both in the execution of works and in the exploitation of infrastructures. In this country it has its greatest asset in the world, the Pedemontana-Veneta highway.
