Carlos Alcaraz is just one win away from returning to the top of the world tennis rankings.
The 19-year-old Spaniard made it into the final of the Masters 1000 tournament in Indian Wells on Saturday with a 7:6(4), 6:3 win over the Italian Jannik Sinner. If Alcaraz wins the $10.1 million competition, he will oust Serbian Novak Djokovic from the “throne” again.
The Russian Daniil Medvedev wants to prevent this in the final on Monday night (CET). The 27-year-old defeated the American Frances Tiafoe 7-5, 7-6(4). And it is probably the most difficult hurdle for Alcaraz at the moment, because Medvedev is in top form: The victory over Tiafoe was his 19th in a row. For his part, only one success separates him from his fourth title in a row after Rotterdam, Doha and Dubai. For him it is about the fifth title at the highest ATP level.
Djokovic condemned to watch
Medvedev had won the only match between the two so far in the second round of Wimbledon in 2021. “He wasn’t the same player then as he is today,” said Medvedev, when asked about the 19-year-old. So in a way it’s like a first encounter for him.
Due to the lack of a coronavirus vaccination, Novak Djokovic has to watch from afar as he soon loses his number one position. In the USA, the rule that foreigners need proof of vaccinations if they arrive by plane is still in force until May 11th. Djokovic had tried in vain for an exemption and will also be absent from Miami next week.
