The Russian head of state Vladimir Putin made a surprise visit to the second largest city in the Donetsk People’s Republic, Mariupol. It is his second surprise visit this week, having previously visited Crimea.
Following his surprise visit to Crimea on Saturday, President Vladimir Putin made an unannounced “work trip” to Mariupol, a Sea of Azov port city liberated by Russian forces last spring as part of the military operation in Ukraine and proclaimed itself after a September referendum Part of Donetsk People’s Republic annexed to Russia.
Putin arrived in Mariupol by helicopter, accompanied by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Chusnullin, several news outlets reported, including TASS and RIA Novostion Sunday morning, citing the Kremlin press service.
The President visited several districts of the city to assess the status of reconstruction work, including the construction of “new neighborhoods, social and educational facilities, housing and community infrastructure, and medical facilities.” He also toured the “waterfront in the area of the yacht club, the theater” and other “memorable places” in the city.
Putin himself also got behind the wheel of a car and drove through the streets of Mariupol to tour the facilities. He also took the time to talk to the residents.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Chusnullin accompanied the head of state on the tour and informed him about the reconstruction of the city, the construction of housing, social facilities, educational institutions and medical centers.
Chusnullin also stressed that the city plans to launch its first tram line as early as this summer. He also reported that there are plans to create new jobs. He explained:
“People came back when they saw that the reconstruction process was underway. People are actively returning with their families. We see that very clearly.”
In addition, Chusnullin thanked Putin for the decision on preferential mortgages for new Russian regions, since there are people in Mariupol “who want to build and buy houses”.
On Saturday, Putin was in Crimea to celebrate the ninth anniversary of the peninsula’s reunification with Russia.
Mariupol was liberated by Russian forces last spring as part of the military operation in Ukraine. The city has become one of the symbols of the Russian military operation, and the victory in this city is one of the greatest triumphs so far.
