Odermatt's unbelievable quota: The dream season in detail

Dominance has a name this ski season: Marco Odermatt.

For the second time in a row, the 25-year-old Swiss clinched the stupid glass cup for the triumph in the overall World Cup – loosely based on Marcel Hirscher – and in an impressive manner. To top it all off, the double world champion from Courchevel has the small balls in the Super-G and giant slalom.

Odermatt celebrated a total of 13 victories this World Cup winter. Only the Swede Ingemar Stenmark (1978/79), Maier (2000/01) and Hirscher (2017/18) managed to do that.

This also tumbled the previous points record set by Hermann Maier, who scored exactly 2,000 points in the 1999/2000 season. Odermatt has now increased the record to 2,042 points. Point records in the overall World Cup>>>

In the coming season, which without a major event will probably take place with even more World Cup races, Odermatt could further expand his own record of points.

But before that, let’s take a closer look at Odermatt’s dream season 2022/23 and the comparison with Maier and Hirscher:

Odermatt’s unbelievable podium rate

Compared to his debut triumph in the overall World Cup in the previous season, Odermatt not only increased the number of points this winter. With 113 wins, he almost doubled his tally from last year, when he had seven top podiums.

With a total of 27 World Cup starts in 2022/23, that’s a win rate of 48 percent. The Swiss was on the podium a total of 22 times (5x second, 4x third) – in 81 percent of the races in which he started.

Also impressive: in 27 races, Odermatt only failed to make it into the top ten twice: on the downhill in Kitzbühel, when he finished 54th after a hussar ride and almost dropped out, and on the downhill at the World Cup final in Andorra, where he Finished 15th.

Due to his meniscus injury sustained on the Streif, Odermatt skipped the giant slalom in Schladming, otherwise he competed in every downhill, super-G and giant slalom race this winter. Not once has he been eliminated.

Hermann Maier got his 2,000 points in 30 races in the winter of 1999/2000, Marcel Hirscher – third in the list of the best points – scored 1,795 points in 2015/16 in his fifth overall World Cup victory in a row in 28 races.

With 13 victories, Odermatt is also ahead of Maier (10) and Hirscher (8). On the podium, Odermatt and the Herminator share number one with 22 each.

In his record-breaking 1999/2000 season, Maier was at the top in his flagship disciplines of downhill, super-G and giant slalom, and he took second place in the combination ranking that still existed at the time. In the downhill alone he scored 800 of his 2,000 points.

Odermatt secured the balls in the giant slalom and Super-G this winter, in the downhill he had to queue behind Aleksander Aamodt Kilde and Vincent Kriechmayr and, despite World Cup gold, is still waiting for his first World Cup victory in the supreme discipline. But he really cleared up in the giant slalom (840 points) and in the Super-G (740).

In his best season in terms of points, 2015/16, Hirscher “only” won the giant slalom World Cup, he was second in slalom and sixth in super-G. The dominance of the Salzburger in the technical disciplines at that time is clear with 766 (RTL) and 780 (Slalom) points scored.
