As evening approached, people filled the streets around the venue ready for the unforgettable weekend that is Lollapalooza. T-shirts of the artists who were going to enjoy, speculation about the setlists, songs and many families. Year after year, the public of this festival meets a very particular characteristic: the most original and extravagant looks.
THE ARTISTS
Shortly after noon, those in charge of kicking off this enormous music festival were Argentines Nani and Guillermo Beresñak, on the Flow and Alternative stages, respectively. Nani gave heartfelt interpretations of her pop songs and Guillermo Beresñak surprised with his way of honoring Latin American tradition in a super personal mix. They were followed by the local duo Plastilina, who inaugurated the Samsung stage with their dreamlike atmosphere, as well as the singer-songwriter An Espil, who conquered the audience with her versatile voice, and the young Cordovan singer Paz Carrara, with an intimate pop-folk show. .
The young ragpicker from Trelew Panther was the first to take the Perry’s stage and won over new fans with the power of his bars, while the Dominican The Change hypnotized with her freshness at the Samsung. The local band Silvestre y la Naranja brought together folk lovers on the Flow stage, while at Alternative the Spanish singer-songwriter Guitarricadelafuente performed songs from his recent album La cantera (2022) in his first show in the country and the Argentine DJ based In Spain, Flaca did a set to pure perreo on the Perry’s stage.
Shortly after 3pm, British singer Suki Waterhouse combined her melodramatic alt-pop ballads with her usual warmth from the Samsung stage, while Argentinian Oscu summoned the trapper crowd on the Perry’s stage. Dante Spinetta brought a healthy dose of Argentinian groove to the evening, and Puerto Rican rapper Villano Antillano showed why she’s coming on an incredible rise.
The Norwegian Aurora came on stage at around 5 in the afternoon and enchanted with her deep songs and perfect execution, while Young Miko brought together those who wanted to listen to some rap and Tove Lo offered a show of purest pop . And if it was about pop, The Rose gave a lecture on k-pop on the Alternative stage. Álvaro Díaz was the choice for those who longed to slowly enter the night with a little hip hop. With just a little to 7 in the evening, many people gathered to see the local trapper star Trueno. Two eminent figures from the local scene followed: the audience was divided between the fans of the mythical Chano, who surprised everyone with the news of the return of Tan Biónica and the band’s visit on stage where they played 4 of their mythical hits. The mistress and lady of rock Marilina Bertoldi delighted everyone with her purest rock, just before the Venezuelan Danny Ocean summoned those who were looking for something of a Latin flavor from the Perry’s stage.
By 9 at night, the expectation for Rosalía’s show tensed the air in front of the Samsung stage. The multi-award-winning artist presented herself with a show different from the one that brought her to these latitudes as part of her MOTOMAMI tour, taking a tour of her career that hypnotized those present. Her mastery with her voice, the multiplicity of genres, the sound that was sought just for her, each seasoning of her made an unforgettable show that leaves no doubt: Rosalía is one of the most avant-garde figures in current music. For those who were already in the party mood, Chicago native John Summit put together a seductive, rhythmic set that had everyone dancing from start to finish.
The icing on the cake was provided by Drake, with his long-awaited debut in Argentina, the kings of ambient pop Cigarettes After Sex and the Australian DJ Alison Wonderland. Drake is one of the biggest stars in the music industry of all time, and he proved it on this edition’s main stage. For lovers of sublimely produced ambient pop, things continued in the hands of Cigarettes After Sex, who plunged the audience into a dreamlike atmosphere in a show without any detail left to chance.
Armin Van Buuren was in charge of closing the first day of #LollaAR 2023 and he was up to the challenge. After a dance set that displayed all his mastery of the genre and made all the spectators dance with the last energy of the day, Armin Van Buuren left everyone wanting more live music, which is precisely what awaits them on the Saturday and Sunday.
