The CDU parliamentary group is reorganizing itself. The new chairman Schnieder is to be elected this Wednesday.
According to the will of its designated chairman Gordon Schnieder, the CDU parliamentary group will score more with its own ideas in the future. We do not make fundamental opposition and badmouth everything. On the contrary, we want to emphasize even more in the future how we will do it better, said the 47-year-old in an interview with the German Press Agency in Mainz. Schnieder, who is also CDU General Secretary, gave examples such as climate protection, public transport, municipal finances, medical care and property tax.
This also includes: We have to permanently connect topics with heads – i.e. a strong head for internal security, one for climate protection or one for the migration issue, said the member of parliament from Trier. As a speaker, the group leader does not have to jump in everywhere. It’s about showing people clearly how the CDU wants to govern this country with good proposals after 2026, emphasized Schnieder.
Schnieder said about the situation in the CDU parliamentary group: We are not apart at all. After the decision to resign from Christian Baldauf announced on December 22 at the end of March, several CDU MPs said in talks with journalists that the decision was preceded by a fierce controversy. Terms such as a gang of four, putsch and intrigues were used. When asked about this, Baldauf and Schnieder said at the time that these internal things should remain internal.
It was a dispute that also happens in families, Schnieder said now. And: We have been working very closely together over the past few weeks.
On January 18, the parliamentary group had agreed to elect Schnieder as Baldauf’s successor at the head of the parliamentary group. A search committee presented this proposal surprisingly quickly.
Schnieder was previously the parliamentary group’s deputy, and the parliamentary group’s economic policy spokesman, Helmut Martin, is to take his place. The doctor of law (59) entered the state parliament in April 2018 as the successor to the then state chairwoman Julia Klöckner.
Baldauf remains state chairman. The party clearly backed him, said Schnieder.
