A trade unionist paralyzes the debate on the hotel industry in 'La Sexta Xplica': "Serious things have been said tonight"

“Are there a lack of waiters in Spain?”. The debate in the second block of The Sixth Explica this Saturday. The conversation has risen in tone when a hotelier has blamed the “change in mentality of young people” for the difficulty in finding workers and another guest directly pointed out the precarious working conditions in the sector.

Once he has managed to calm down the waters on the set, José Yélamo has given the floor to Afra Blanco, who has used figures to dismantle the businesswoman’s arguments: “I think that, tonight, very, very, very serious things have been said. 50% of part-time contracts in the hospitality industry are involuntary, okay? The truth is missing.”

Blanco: “The labor inspectorate, after what we have heard here today, should be involved in much tougher sanctions”

The trade unionist has given as an example the case of two provinces in which the hospitality agreements are paralyzed: “In Murcia it has not been renewed since 2011. In Malaga, the fourth province with the highest tourism, it expired in 2022 and has been postponed until 2025. A salary table that would have to grow by 2.5% has dropped by 1%.

“30% of the workers are at the interprofessional minimum wage. Official data, huh? Official data!”remarked the collaborator of the current affairs space of La Sexta, also pointing out: “It is considered that the benefits of this sector are growing between 20 and 40%. Some chains have already presented results and have benefits above 42%”.

“It’s a lie!”: the outburst of indignation of a young man in La Sexta for how a hotelier speaks of the sector

Blanco has made reference to a previous intervention, to that of Juan Antonio Báez, vice president of the Youth Council, the young man who has faced the hotelier: “He has hit a lot with the reality that is lived. It also seems to me that the inspection of work, in addition to increasing the number of inspectors, after what we have heard here todayshould be involved in much harsher sanctions and that, in any case, be exemplary”.
