This Saturday, March 18, the lists for the May 7 elections close, in which the governor and vice president, mayors, councilors, provincial legislators and conventional constituents will be elected in La Rioja. For the conformation, the law of parity must be applied, which does not reach the Executive Function, And the big question these days is whether those who hold power will have the will and political legitimacy to form parity formulas in all the alliances that arise.
In the case of front of all, the definition for the running mate is in the hands of the governor Ricardo Quintela, who is going for his re-election. In this sense, the current lieutenant governor Florencia López expressed that “They cannot demand from the Governor something that he has to decide and that the Parity law does not require. We cannot forget about the Interior, because we have been in federal struggles for more than 200 years, and we are still in it,” said López, alluding to the fact that in the political armed forces there are mayors who ask for representation in the formula.
López spoke of the parity law sanctioned in 2020 and affirmed that “it has been a great advance because it established the participation of women. The woman is always present, in fact, she has had to accompany him to the Governor, but there are other issues that must be taken into account, first the one who leads this process is our Governor because the party congress (of the PJ) gave him powers to decide who will accompany him in the formula“, said.
And he added: “I congratulate all the women’s movements because I know that there will be many mayors, many vice mayors, councilors. Progress is always good and not imposition, the law does not impose parity,” López said.
The discussion for parity democracy not only includes being able to comply with the assembly of lists in accordance with what the regulations say, but also the possibility that women and diversities head the lists. With her expressions, López goes against what the women of her own party in La Rioja are currently preaching.. From the PJ they launched a campaign in recent days, and there were expressions from provincial and national officials and legislators in this regard.
“Congratulations that the colleagues understand that this is a criterion of equality, opportunities and the exercise of political rights. It is not a possibility that enables, today it is a reality. The conformation of the lists has to go with parity criteria”, said the deputy for the Capital, lourdes ortiz.
“The lists that are available for councilors, deputies, conventional have to be given in parity criteria. We want to work on awareness and be able to understand that compañeras can lead some proposals. It is part of the cultural battle that I feel the community in general is going through,” Ortiz said in journalistic statements.
For her part, the national deputy Gabriela Pedrali, He maintained that “parity is part of everyday life and much more so in politics.” And he stated: “We are 52% of the population and we need to be represented in the lists and formulas. We are looking for something we have fought for and have achieved. There is something that we also ask for and that is that women also (in the interior) head lists, because parity is also sought from that place, ”said the national legislator.
