International Criminal Court issues arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin

The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin and the Commissioner for Children’s Rights in the Office of the President of the Russian Federation, Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova.

In a statement published in its official sitethe ICC states that Vladimir Putin and Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova are “allegedly responsible for the war crime of illegal deportation of population (children) and illegal transfer of population (children) from occupied areas of Ukraine to the Russian Federation.”

According to the court, “the crimes will have been committed in occupied Ukrainian territory since at least February 24, 2022”, the date of the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“There are reasonable grounds to believe that Mr Putin, through others (Article 25(3)(a) of the Rome Statute), and (ii) by his failure to exercise adequate control over civilian and military subordinates who committed the acts”, argues the ICC.
