The film industry is eagerly awaiting the 95th Oscars on Sunday evening (local time; in Germany Monday 1:00 a.m.) in Hollywood. The science fiction film “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is the favorite with eleven nominations. The German anti-war film “Nothing New in the West” and the tragic comedy “The Banshees of Inisherin” each have a chance of winning in nine categories. Films such as “The Fabelmans”, “Top Gun: Maverick”, “Elvis” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” have also been nominated several times.
Never in the history of the Oscars has a German film had as many trophy chances as “Nothing New in the West”. The film by director Edward Berger, based on the book by Erich Maria Remarque from 1929, is also the first German work that could win Best Film.
Actors in the running include Cate Blanchett (“Tár”), Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), “Elvis” actor Austin Butler and Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”). The 95th Academy Awards is hosted by comedian and presenter Jimmy Kimmel.
