Selensky not at the Oscars – Ukrainian Foreign Minister criticizes non-invitation
Saturday, March 11, 10:24 am: Ukraine President Vladimir Zelenskyy is not allowed to speak at the Oscars this Sunday. The Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has now criticized this with sharp words. Kuleba told BILD am SONNTAG: “I think if All Silence on the Western Front gets an Oscar for best foreign film while President Zelenskyy, who is fighting, is leading the country fighting the biggest war in Europe since World War II, not allowed to speak at the Oscars, you will not find a better example of the hypocrisy of top executives and producers in the film industry.”
Kuleba continued: “The word ridiculous is not enough to describe this hypocrisy. I don’t question the quality of the film. I’m just saying folks, when you’re about to award a film about war and you don’t realize that when you’re drinking champagne and wearing nice dresses and diamonds, someone else doesn’t want to hear a real war story, happening here and now, then something is wrong with you.”
Claudia Roth hopes for an Oscar for “Nothing New in the West”
3:24 p.m.: Before the Oscars were presented this Sunday, Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth reaffirmed the importance of director Edward Berger’s film “Nothing New in the West”, which has been nominated for nine awards. “It is also a political signal and sign against war in the middle of Europe, against the inhuman cynicism of warmongers like Putin that a film with this horrible story based on the novel by Erich Maria Remarque has been nominated,” said the Green politician.
Roth traveled to Los Angeles for the awards ceremony. She also wants to meet the film team there. Discussions are planned with Berger and the actors Daniel Brühl and Felix Kammerer, among others.
“Of course I was really happy about the nominations,” said Roth. “If for the very first time a German film manages not only to be nominated in the category Best International Film, but also for Best Film, then that’s really great. Of course, I hope that this film also wins Oscars.”
Friday, March 10, 12:15 p.m.: Again no Oscar guest performance by Volodymyr Zelenskyj. As in the previous year, those responsible decided against greetings from the Ukrainian President. Sean Penn threatened to return his Oscars last year. According to a report by “Variety” – Selenskyj wanted to speak at the Oscars and was rejected by those responsible
For the first time in decades, the Oscars will be held without a red carpet
March 9, 10:53 am: Surprise at the “Roll Out”: For the first time in decades, the Oscar guests will not walk across a red carpet on Sunday – the promenade in front of the Dolby Theater in Hollywood will be decorated in “champagne” color. Dozens of camera teams and press representatives from all over the world followed the traditional rolling out of the carpet on Hollywood Boulevard on Wednesday (local time).
US comedian Jimmy Kimmel, who will host the 95th Academy Awards this year, was also there. With a biting comment about the beige color, he alluded to the slap scandal at the last trophy gala. People are wondering if there will be anger and violence again this year, said Kimmel, who is conducting the awards ceremony for the third time. He hopes this is not the case. “Choosing the champagne color over a red carpet shows how confident we are that no blood will be spilled,” Kimmel teased.
At last year’s gala, actor Will Smith smacked comedian Chris Rock onstage after he made a joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett.
Oscar Academy executive director Bill Kramer came up with a more elegant explanation for the carpet’s color change. They wanted to add a touch of glamor to the celebrity parade on Sunday night.
Almost 100 meters long and a good ten meters wide, the carpet covers part of the otherwise busy Hollywood Boulevard. Dozens of helpers will install the famous catwalk, trim edges and weld seams by Sunday. For this purpose, barriers and grandstands will be set up for the fans and the press.
Oscars 2023: judges have already cast their votes
2:42 p.m.: The election of this year’s Oscar winners is over, but nobody knows the result of the vote yet. By Tuesday evening (local time), the ballot papers from the more than 9,500 Oscar jurors had to be received at the Beverly Hills Film Academy. Until the 95th trophy gala on Sunday, employees of the auditing company PricewaterhouseCoopers will count the votes in 23 prize categories to determine the winners. The result is brought directly to the Oscar ceremony in sealed envelopes.
The countdown to the gala has begun in front of the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, where the stars will walk the red carpet. Several blocks of Hollywood Boulevard, popular with tourists, have already been cordoned off. Grandstands are erected behind barricades and the promenade is decorated.
The Oscar Academy on Tuesday announced additional celebrity aides who will be giving out awards on stage, including Antonio Banderas, Nicole Kidman and Sigourney Weaver. Stars such as Glenn Close, Riz Ahmed, Dwayne Johnson and Michael B. Jordan had previously been named presenters. The 95th Academy Awards is hosted by comedian and presenter Jimmy Kimmel.
The science fiction film “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is the favorite with eleven nominations. The German anti-war film “Nothing New in the West” and the tragic comedy “The Banshees of Inisherin” each have a chance of winning in nine categories. Movies like The Fabelmans, Top Gun: Maverick, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever also received multiple nominations.
To prevent scandals: This year there is a crisis team
Wednesday, March 8, 12 p.m.: There shouldn’t be a moment of shock like last year. US actor Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage over a joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett. The organizers have now set up a crisis team, as the academy emphasizes. One thing is for sure – Smith is not among the guests at the Dolby Theater. After the scandal, the Oscar winner (“King Richard”) was excluded from Oscar ceremonies for ten years.
