It was with a smile and good energy that Joana de Sousa Cardoso, aged 41, met us after another morning of radiotherapy at the IPO in Lisbon. In June last year, the architect felt a lump through self-palpation. She immediately called her doctor and soon found out that she would once again face a tough battle with breast cancer, the same cancer that knocked her off her feet 14 years ago. A fight supported by the family – especially the husband, Amâncio Santosaged 46, their daughter, oliviasix, and the eldest son, Afonsoaged 19, as a result of his previous marriage, with Mico da Camara Pereira, – and which once again did not rob him of his ability to dream. That’s why she continues to invest in her architecture firm and in the projects she has done for her husband’s gym chain.
