Sergei Zuev was dismissed from the post of rector of Shaninka (Moscow Higher School of Social and Economic Sciences). Maria Sigova became the new rector, TASS reports with reference to the press service of the university. Zuev, the report says, will remain Shaninka’s supervisor and will participate in the discussion of the university’s future movement strategy.
Zuev is a defendant in a criminal case on embezzlement of money from the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation. Together with him, the defendants in the case, among others, are the former deputy head of the Ministry of Education Marina Rakova. On March 6 was appointed preliminary hearing in this case.
Sergei Zuev was detained in October 2021. Employees of the Federal Penitentiary Service took him from the hospital, where the rector Shaninka ended up with a hypertensive crisis. The rector was placed under house arrest. In November 2021, the court, at the request of the prosecutor’s office, ordered the arrest of Zuev. After that, he was hospitalized several times. Despite petitions asking to change the measure of restraint, Zuev remained in the pre-trial detention center until August 2022.
Zuev was released from the pre-trial detention center, according to the investigator, after he pleaded guilty, “exposed other accomplices”, and also paid damages in the case in the amount of more than 15 million rubles.
Among the defendants in the case, in which Sergei Zuev is accused, was Vladimir Mau, who at that moment headed the RANEPA. He was first placed under house arrest, then the preventive measure was changed to a written undertaking not to leave, and in October 2022, Mau’s criminal case was dropped. In January 2023, Mau was fired from the post of rector of the RANEPA.
