Starting this year, Latvia confiscates cars from drivers with a blood alcohol concentration above 1.5. Since the state towing yards quickly filled up with hundreds of vehicles, it was decided to donate them to the Ukrainian military without further ado.

In two months since the law came into force in Latvia, 200 cars have already been confiscated from people caught drunk behind the wheel.

Reinis Poznaks, the founder of the non-governmental organization “Twitter Convoy”, was commissioned by the government to bring the confiscated cars to Ukraine. He was promised two dozen confiscated cars a week. In a tweet, Poznaks wrote:

“You can go to war with Latvians. This is proven by those who fight in the front and those who fight in the rear and scratch everything they need to scratch for the front. Until victory. Update 800+”

Poznak had previously collected money and donated cars, totaling two million euros and 1,200 cars. The idea of bringing the cars to Ukraine came from himself. Latvian Finance Minister Arvils Ašeradens, who agreed to the cars being transferred to Poznak, said:

“We are ready to do practically anything to support the Ukrainians.”
