Chaim Topol Israeli actor, known for his role in the 1971 musical ‘Fiddler on the Roof‘, died this Thursday in Tel Aviv, as confirmed by the President of Israel, Isaac Herzog.

“He filled the cinema screens with his presence, but above all entered deep into our hearts“, the Israeli president wrote on his Twitter account, offering his condolences to the actor’s family and friends.

Topol has died at the age of 87, after a long battle against Alzheimer’s, at his home in Tel Aviv surrounded by his family, according to information from The Times of Israel.

Best known for his portrayal of Tevye in the film version of Norman Jewison’s ‘Fiddler on the Roof’, he also played the main character on numerous occasions from 1966 until its last performance in 2009.
