Against the background of an imminent strike by postmen and parcel carriers, Deutsche Post will present its annual figures on Thursday. A record result is expected. The Verdi union wants to announce the result of a ballot on the same day and whether there will be an open-ended industrial dispute. According to the union, more than 100,000 members of the Post & Parcel Germany division were entitled to vote. If at least 75 percent reject the post office’s tariff offer, there will be a strike.
Verdi is demanding 15 percent more wages in a 12-month collective agreement. Swiss Post is offering a tariff increase in two stages from 2024, which the company says would improve pay by an average of 11.5 percent. Separately, starting this year, employees are to gradually receive 3,000 euros net, which will flow as an inflation compensation premium. Should there be a strike, the delivery of millions of parcels and letters would in all likelihood be significantly delayed.
Last fall, the globally active group forecast that it would make an operating profit of up to 8.4 billion euros in 2022 – that would be the highest annual result in the company’s history. Since the company hasn’t released any preliminary figures since then, it should have roughly met the forecast.
