The Court of Cassation overturned the sentence of 10 police officers convicted in North Ossetia for torture that led to the death of a detainee

The Fifth Cassation Court of General Jurisdiction overturned the verdict against 10 police officers convicted of torturing North Ossetian official Vladimir Tskaev. This is reported by the human rights project “Axioma”.

The case was sent back for a new trial to the court of first instance. The police officers who served their sentences in the colony will remain in custody for the time being.

The court of first instance in 2021 sentenced ten police officers to real terms of imprisonment – from 2.5 to 10 years. The investigation established that four people directly tortured Tskaev, five signed falsified reports, and one more did not interfere with the torture.

In April 2022, the Supreme Court of North Ossetia commuted the sentences of six out of ten police officers; four of them were released from punishment due to the expiration of the statute of limitations. Two more convicts at the end of 2022 came out from a parole colony.
