PSVR2 aims to be one of the most cutting-edge VR headsets of the moment

After months of anticipation of its new virtual reality glasses, Sony launched Playstation VR2 last February as the evolution in the right direction. Now, the company has revealed that it thinks the device has a “good chance” to outsell its predecessor. To remember, the PS4 PlayStation VR launched in October 2016 reached five million units sold at the end of 2019.

A priori, the challenge of PlayStation VR2 as it requires having a PS5, a console that until this year has not been able to have stock in stores, together with an additional outlay of €599.99, a price harshly criticized by some players who consider it excessive . However, Sony’s executive vice president and chief financial officer, Hiroki Totoki, admits that the company’s expectations for the hardware are most positive.

We are very happy to launch VR2 on PS5”, admits Totoki, who has explained that the virtual reality market could be becoming one of the fastest growing areas in the media and entertainment segment during the first half of this decade. In this way, thanks to a “good potential” for the VR/AR market, he also believes that there is a “good potential for technological development in this field“.

Thanks to these statements, Sony reiterates its confidence in PlayStation VR2, of which a production drop of two million to one million units was rumored this first quarter of the year. However, we will have to wait a while to find out the first sales data for the device, which for now has received interesting proposals such as Horizon: Call of the Mountain, one of its greatest exclusivities.
