Dominic Thiem knows his first round opponent at the ATP Masters in Indian Wells.
The current number 102 in the ATP world rankings will face Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in round one, reports “Tennisnet”. Thiem has already played nine times against the 34-year-old – the Lower Austrian left the pitch as the winner a total of eight times.
The signs of a promotion to the second round, in which Thiem would have to deal with the Italian Lorenzo Musetti, are therefore not bad, even if the 29-year-old is currently struggling with mental problems and fell out of the top 100 again is.
Encounter for Thiem with a bland aftertaste
Thiem’s mood should also be somewhat clouded by the fact that his serious wrist injury in the summer of 2021 happened in a duel with Mannarino in the round of 16 of the tournament in Mallorca, with a 5-2 lead in the first set, and he finally did had to give up.
After his first-round exit in Santiago de Chile, the former number three in the world is now hoping for an increase in performance and a quick solution to his ongoing mental problems.
The first round of the 128-strong field of participants will be played starting tomorrow, Wednesday. The Masters in Indian Wells is endowed with a total prize money of two times 8.8 million US dollars, of which the winner receives 1.26 million each.
