NEW YORK, March 7th. /TASS/. The conflict in Ukraine showed that the United States made a strategic mistake in energy by refusing to develop domestic oil production. This opinion was expressed on Monday by Alaska Senator Dan Sullivan, speaking at the Ceraweek energy conference in Houston. The broadcast was on site Events.
“The invasion showed the recklessness of the policy of the current administration. It was a strategic mistake that they focused so much on stopping the production of American energy,” he said.
Sullivan advocates the development of oil production in Alaska. However, in this region there are serious restrictions on the development of minerals, introduced to protect the environment. “Instead of buying oil in Venezuela, we could produce it in Alaska,” Sullivan said.
For more than a decade, restrictive measures against the development of minerals in the United States have been the subject of sharp criticism from American companies working in this area and politicians representing their interests. Despite these restrictions, Mike Sommers, executive director of the American Petroleum Institute, said on Ceraweek on Monday that the United States has increased oil production on its territory from 5 million barrels per day to 12 million barrels per day since 2010.
John Podesta, Senior Adviser to the US President on Innovation and Implementation of Clean Energy Projects, also said at one of the conference sessions that the US authorities intend to reform the licensing of new mining projects.
