Luka Modric continues his career in Croatia’s national football team at the age of 37. The world footballer of 2018 is in the squad for the World Cup third place for the European Championship qualifiers against Wales and Turkey at the end of March.
The captain is already Croatia’s record player with 161 caps. Before the World Cup, Modric had toyed with resigning if he won the title. That didn’t happen, even though Croatia convinced again after second place in Russia in 2018.
Real Madrid are not said to be thrilled
At Real Madrid, the commitment to the national team should be viewed critically: Modric’s contract expires at the end of the season, the Spanish champions would have preferred it if the long-distance runner had spared himself the additional games of the national team. Modric: “If the club think I deserve a contract then I would happily stay, but only on the basis of my performances.”
Salzburg’s Luka Sucic is also in the Croatian squad. The midfielder had to leave the field shortly before the break in the 4-1 win over Rapid on Sunday.
