The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) applies a summer rate for the inhabitants of the locations with high temperaturesso that their pockets are not so affected by the use of air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
Although it depends on each locality, the CFE contemplates the summer period between February and Octoberin addition to offering certain rates depending on the minimum average temperature.
These are the classifications of the rates depending on the temperature in each location:
- Rate 1A, 25 degrees Celsius minimum average temperature in summer.
- Rate 1B, 28 degrees Celsius.
- Rate 1C, 30 degrees Celsius.
- Rate 1D, 31 degrees Celsius.
- Rate 1E, 32 degrees Celsius.
- Rate 1F, 33 degrees Celsius.
The 1A, 1B, 1C or 1D rates, this March 2023 are the following:
- basic consumption 0.856 pesos for each of the first 100 kilowatt-hours.
- intermediate consumption 0.992 pesos for each of the next 50 kilowatt-hours.
- surplus consumption 3,409 pesos for each kilowatt-hour additional to the previous ones.
- These charges represent an annual increase of 7.5 percent for basic consumption, 7.7 percent for intermediate consumption and 7.5 percent for surplus consumption.
In the case of rates 1E and 1F, this March you must pay:
- basic consumption 0.709 pesos for each of the first 100 kilowatt-hours.
- intermediate consumption 0.886 pesos for each of the next 50 kilowatt-hours.
- surplus consumption 3,409 pesos for each kilowatt-hour additional to the previous ones.
Therefore, if you make a basic consumption within these categories you will pay 7.3 percent more than last year, while for intermediate and surplus consumption the annual increases were 7.4 and 7.5 percent, respectively.
To measure these quantities, it is enough to remember that 1 kilowatt-hour is equivalent to 10 100-watt bulbs on for one hour.
In addition, according to CFE data, the use of a window air conditioner (1.5 tons) for 7 hours a day can represent a bimonthly cost of 4,528 pesos and an annual cost of 27,168 pesos.
Likewise, a refrigerator programmed to operate 20 minutes every hour can cost you 255 pesos a two-month period and 1,533 pesos a year.
Rates 1A to 1F they have a six month summer term in which government support for household electricity consumption increases. However, the rate applied and the months of application of the summer period vary depending on the location.
In which states does the summer rate apply?
Some cities where these rates apply are Acapulco, Ciudad Acuña, Cancún, Coatzacoalcos, Tampico, Tepic, Campeche, Torreón, Monterrey, Mérida and Chetumal.
According to data from the National Water Commission (CONAGUA), 2023 aims to be hotter than last yearsince in January and February an average temperature of 17.1 and 18.0 degrees Celsius was registered, respectively, while last year the temperatures were 16.6 (January) and 17 degrees (February).
The entities with the highest temperature (on average) during February were Campeche (26 degrees), Quintana Roo (25.7), Tabasco (25.7), Colima (25.5), Yucatán (25.4), Guerrero (25.1), Chiapas (23.1), Oaxaca (22.9) and Nayarit (22.2).
