A flight that covered the route from Istanbul to Barcelona had to return to the Turkish airport due to the bad smell on board that the tropical fruit durian gave off in the hold, according to the portal TRT Have.
Flight TK 1855’s cargo sensors alerted the cabin crew to the odor, so the pilot captain decided to return to Istanbul airport while flying over Bulgarian airspace.
After the plane landed safely in Istanbul, the odor was determined to be caused by durian, a tropical fruit from Southeast Asia that gives off a strong odor when ripe. The passengers continued their journey to Barcelona on another plane.
The durian is known for its delicious taste and unpleasant smell, which has earned it the nickname “fruit that tastes like heaven and smells like hell.”
