Actually, the couple did not want a second dog. But when he saw the four-legged friend’s happy face on Facebook, his heart leapt. The animal welfare association “Trenton Animals Rock” in Trenton, New York (USA) was urgently looking for new owners for “Max”.
Upon seeing the dog, the couple couldn’t believe how similar it looked to their “Arthur.” There was no other choice: this animal had to be saved. Said and done. But what the couple learned later, when both dogs were home, was to exceed their wildest dreams.
Couple sees dog – “Our hearts broke”
After the American saw Max’s cute face on Facebook in early December, it was about her. “The post described a Chow Chow/Shar Pei mix who was terrified at the shelter and shivered in the corner of his kennel all day,” she told The Dodo. “What immediately struck me was the dog’s big smile in the picture they provided and how similar he looked to my friend Zack’s dog, Arthur.”
Max was in the shelter because his owners didn’t have the time to take care of him anymore. The woman showed her friend his picture. “You know what we have to do now – we have to save him,” he told her. Then everything happened very quickly. The couple got in touch with the animal welfare association and just a few hours later they saw Max live for the first time.
“They described him as a super loving dog, but he was terrified at the shelter and had to get out of there as soon as possible,” the animal lover recalled. “Our hearts broke when we met him.” The four-legged friend was shaking with fear.
DNA test brings incredible things to light
In the new home, Max, now called Wes, quickly adjusted to the new surroundings and became friends with his animal partner. “They sleep together, run together, they just do everything together,” said the keeper happily. The animals were not only very similar in appearance, but also in behavior.
Because Wes was supposed to be a mix of Chow Chow and Shar Pei, according to the shelter, the couple wanted to be sure and know exactly what breed the four-legged friend belonged to. So they did a DNA test and then one for their other dog, Arthur. It turned out that Wes wasn’t a mix at all, but a purebred Shar-Pei – just like Arthur. But there were even more similarities.
Dog brothers reunited
Not only were the two animals of the same breed, they were actually brothers! That’s why they were so alike. “We were absolutely shocked to find out they are brothers, but at the same time it explained so much,” said the surprised owner.

“It’s such a great feeling to know that not only did we save Wes and give him the life he always deserved, but he was also reunited with his brother who he was so close to,” she said “The Dodo”. “And that he can live a peaceful life with his best friend/brother by his side.”
