WinterthurAccident at work ends in death – construction worker (27) buried in a ditch
On Thursday morning, a construction worker (27) was buried in a ditch in the city of Winterthur. Previously, he had descended into the ditch, after which the walls came loose.
A fatal accident occurred in Winterthur on Thursday morning: As the Zurich cantonal police wrote in a statement, construction workers were busy digging a trench in a residential area in the city.
After a 27-year-old worker climbed into the several meters deep and unsecured ditch, the side walls slipped and buried the man. His colleague and the alarmed forces of the Winterthur city police tried to rescue the buried person.
Ditch had to be secured before salvage
Due to the unsecured trench and the high personal risk, the trench first had to be secured against further slipping by a construction company with a suction excavator and shoring walls.
After the rescue, only the death of the man could be determined. The accident at work is being investigated by the cantonal police and the public prosecutor’s office in Winterthur/Unterland.
In addition to the Zurich canton police and the Winterthur city police, the Winterthur fire brigade, the Winterthur rescue service, the Zurich Forensic Institute, a structural engineer, the Winterthur/Unterland public prosecutor’s office, a fire brigade inspector from the GVZ and a safety consultant from SUVA were on duty.
