Luca Brecel has qualified for the 1/8th finals of the German Masters snooker. Brecel defeated Welshman Matthew Stevens in the fourth round in Berlin. The Belgian was first 0-2 indebted, but turned the situation around completely.
Stevens (WS-52) is a lot lower in the world ranking than Brecel, but in his career he was already good for two World Cup finals and the title at the UK Championship in 2003. A lot of experience, and he also played against Brecel the best start with a 128 break.
In a very mediocre second frame, Brecel missed a lot of opportunities. Stevens took advantage and doubled his lead.
Then Brecel sprang into action and immediately hung the signs. The 27-year-old Limburger, a losing finalist in Berlin in 2016, continued his momentum and took the next three frames with breaks of 51 and 84 for a 5-2 victory. Stevens did not score a single point in the last four frames.
For a place in the quarter-finals, Brecel will compete against the winner of the duel between the Englishman Robert Milkins (WS-31) and the Welsh amateur Daniel Wells.
