It is still one of the best stunts in his time at Club Brugge. In 2019, Bart Verhaeghe managed to bring Simon Mignolet back to Belgium from Liverpool.
A transfer that the chairman of blue-black has not regretted for a second four years later. Yesterday’s award once again underlined the deal’s success.
“Simon enforced this himself,” said Verhaeghe. “As a goalkeeper you have to do your best to win such a prize anyway. We are grateful and honored that Simon succeeded in this.”
“He stands for everything Club Brugge is”, the chairman continued. “Someone who stands with both feet on the ground. Simon remains level-headed through highs and lows.”
“He is a hard worker, professional and beautiful person. We are convinced that Simon has many more years ahead of us with us.”
Hopefully for Verhaeghe and co, they will not start as turbulent as 2023. Due to the long winless series, dark clouds are gathering above Jan Breydel for the first time in a long time – even the top 4 is no longer a certainty.
“We are not used to that, but we can place it”, the strong man of blue-black put into perspective. “We know the reasons behind the underperformance. Now we’re just going to work hard and do our best. Hopefully Simon’s Golden Boot will give us some extra confidence.”
Bart Verhaeghe is a member of the task force that must find the new trainer of the Red Devils. “Unfortunately I can’t say anything about that”, Verhaeghe grinned.
“But the file is in good hands and a whole team is doing its best to bring everything to a successful conclusion. We believe 200% in the talent present at the Devils, they deserve a good national coach. We are working on it in peace and serenity.”
