World Youth Day Infrastructures "must bear in mind the dimension of the encounter"

THE World Youth Day Foundation he defended that all the infrastructures for the event “must bear in mind the dimension of the meeting”, which should receive one million pilgrims, and committed to disclosing the costs of the event.

“All associated infrastructures – and, to date, Parque Tejo is the confirmed venue for the main events (vigil and final mass) – must bear in mind the dimension of the meeting. of WYD [Jornada Mundial da Juventude] and the necessary scale for the meeting of about a million pilgrims with the Pope – for which there are no prepared infrastructures in Lisbon”, reads a response from the foundation.

The Lisbon City Council (CML) directly awarded the construction of the stage-altar of the WYD, which will cost more than five million euros, which led to complaints of “lack of transparency” on the part of the opposition to the executive of Carlos Moedas and a request from Chega for the president of CML to go to Parliament to explain the costs of the event that brings Pope Francis to Portugal in August.

According to information made available on the Public Procurement Base Portal, the construction of the stage-altar “was awarded for 4.24 million euros (plus VAT)”, adding to that value “1.06 million euros for foundations indirect coverage”.

“The WYD Foundation is committed to disclosing, throughout the project, the costs and investments of this unprecedented event for our country, which are its responsibility”, adds the foundation in the note.

On Wednesday, Carlos Moedas said that he knew that the construction of the stage-altar for WYD would be very expensive, indicating that it will be carried out with the specifications of the Church.
