Unlucky Alexander Hendrickx: "Still shed a few tears"

Even before the tournament really had to start for the Belgians, Alexander Hendrickx fell out with a knee injury.

How is the Red Lions’ penalty corner specialist doing? “It’s okay,” Hendrickx replies. “It’s never nice to fall out with an injury.”

Hendrickx immediately sensed that it was serious. “When the Japanese walked on me, I felt my knee turn. I tried to spring up and knew it wasn’t great.”

The international now has to watch in India. “Fun is different. Yesterday I was in the stands while I wanted to be on the field. I still shed a few tears.”

“It still sucks. I would rather have been injured in a competition than at a World Cup, but it is now.”

Can Alexander Hendrickx make a virtue of necessity and explore India? “No, I immediately started my recovery in the gym,” he laughs. “I want to be back on the field as soon as possible.”

“My rehabilitation will take 6 to 8 weeks, although I certainly do not want to start again too soon. If my cruciate ligament fails, I will be out for 8 months. Rather a longer rehabilitation than.”

The teammates agree. Hendrickx: “They are nice to me. I got a lot of hugs, but they shouldn’t think about it too long. The boys have to play matches.”

Hendrickx normally hammers the penalty corners into goal. Yesterday Tom Boon took over his role with verve.

“I was happy when he hit the target,” says Hendrickx. “It’s also good for confidence.”

A confrontation with the Netherlands will more than likely follow in the semi-finals. “That would be nice,” responds Alexander Hendrickx, who earns his living in Amstelveen.

“The Netherlands has rejuvenated considerably, but it continues to look out. They will be hungry on the field anyway. The Netherlands now has more of a team than before.”

The semifinals are scheduled for Friday. This afternoon, the Netherlands will first play the quarterfinals against South Korea.
