Alexander Kulyabin, the former director of the Novosibirsk Krasny Fakel Theatre, who was arrested on January 24 in a case of embezzlement, is suspected of illegally paying salary bonuses to his son, Timofei Kulyabin, the former chief director of the theater. This is reported by Kommersant, citing sources familiar with the materials of the criminal case.
According to investigators, the amount of additional payments for several years amounted to about 1.8 million rubles. When these facts were revealed by the audit, the director of the theater compensated the damage to the Ministry of Culture of the Novosibirsk Region at the expense of the Red Torch, the newspaper writes.
On January 26, Aleksandr Kulyabin will be given a measure of restraint.
Alexander Kulyabin headed the Red Torch Theater for 23 years. At the end of December, he was fired, and the performances of his son, director Timofey Kulyabin, were removed from the theater’s repertoire. On January 24, the prosecutor’s office of the Novosibirsk region announced the detention of Kulyabin Sr. and the investigation of a criminal case against him on embezzlement of funds on an especially large scale (part 4 of article 160 of the Criminal Codeis punishable by imprisonment for up to ten years).
After the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Timofey Kulyabin opposed the war and left the country. In April, he stepped down as chief director of Red Torch. In May, the Bolshoi Theater canceled performances of the opera Don Pasquale directed by Kulyabin.
