“We have officially received the termination of the agreement,” said the Foreign Ministry in Paris on Wednesday. France will respect the one-month deadline, a ministry spokesman said.
The agreement on the deployment of French soldiers in Burkina Faso was signed in 2018. France currently has around 400 special forces in the West African country tasked with helping the country fight jihadist groups. The military junta, in power since September, has in recent months moved closer to Russia, which is expanding its influence in Africa with the help of Wagner Group mercenaries.
