Chan Algeria: Morocco not leaving, Mali aims for the trophy

For its second outing in the group match of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) Algeria 2023, Mali was beaten on Wednesday January 24, a goal to 0 by Mauritania. A defeat that eliminates the local Eagles from the competition.

Sadly beaten one goal to 0 by Mauritania, the local Eagles are eliminated in the group stage of the African Nations Championship (CHAN), Algeria 2023. This constitutes a great disappointment for a country which had been finalist of the last edition of the competition.

Against Mauritania, the local Eagles made a collective shipwreck by never giving the impression of wanting to win the match. The teammates of goalkeeper Germain Berthé, lacking teeth, were seriously jostled by much more conquering Mauritanians and determined to win the victory synonymous with qualification for the quarter-finals. It is therefore logically the Mauritanians who will open the scoring in the 53e minute by Mamadou Sy. A score that the Mourabitounes manage to keep until the final whistle of the referee.

However, the data was very clear before the start of this meeting. Failing a victory over Mauritania, a draw with goal was enough to qualify for the quarter-finals. Since Angola and Mauritania had a goalless draw a few days earlier. An advantage which should benefit Ousmane Coulibaly said Kalaba and his comrades but which unfortunately could not seize.

This fiasco of the local Eagles at CHAN is first and foremost the responsibility of the coach, Nouhoum Diané. First on the choice of men to face Mauritania. He completely turned his team upside down by profoundly reorganizing the team that started against Angola, causing some players to miss the mark. A trial and error which is symptomatic of a technician who does not know his players.

Mali finishes last in the pool

Then, the technical staff voluntarily let go of the services of the top scorer of the national football championship, Nouhoum Cissé, striker of the Black Star. This caused misunderstanding among all observers, especially since the coach only mentioned the player’s lack of experience. What is incomprehensible because his inexperience did not prevent him from being at the top of the ranking of scorers in the national football championship. And then, the technical staff must know, better than anyone, that it is only by playing competitions that one cannot acquire experience.

By not selecting, coach Diané minimized his chances of going very far in the competition. Because you can’t do without the best gunner in the championship and want to go far in the competition, especially in a country that is sorely lacking in quality strikers.

As a reminder, the local Eagles were in Group D with Mauritania and Angola. Mali finished last in the pool behind Angola and Mauritania. The latter qualifies for the quarter-finals where she will face her Senegalese neighbors. The local Eagles are expected in Bamako in the next few hours.
