Air Force intercepts suspicious aircraft

THE Portuguese Air Force (FAP) intercepted a suspicious aircraft in national airspace, coming from the south of the Algarve and heading north, and warned the authorities on the ground about its location, was released today.

In a statement, the FAP indicated that this aircraft, uncommunicated and unidentified, approached the national airspace, on Tuesday afternoon, when it was detected through the air defense and air policing system.

According to the FAP, a pair of F-16M fighters and, at the same time, because the unidentified aircraft flying at low speed and at low altitudeIt was also committed a P-3C CUP+ plane.

“Through the electronic systems that equip the P-3C CUP+ planeit was possible to follow up and monitor the flight of the suspect aircraft, which made it possible to inform, in real time, its location to the competent authorities on the ground”.

Ferreira do Alentejo

The Air Force stressed that the suspicious aircraft ended up landing in a place near Ferreira do Alentejoin the district of Beja.

Today’s edition of Jornal de Notícias reports that this aircraft dropped two bales of hashish next to the A26 motorwayin the municipality of Ferreira do Alentejowhere a group of drug dealers were waiting in a vehicle to collect the drugs. “They were pursued by the GNR, but they abandoned the car and the drugs and fled on foot”, can be read in the news from JN.

Contacted by the Lusa agency, the Beja Territorial Command of the GNR referred to the Judiciary Police (PJ).

This police, also contacted by Lusa, declined to provide information.

The national air defense system is integrated into that of NATO and is made up of sensors and by a command and control system, which is responsible for monitoring the national airspace, added the FAP.
