Zelensky's request to Belarus

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky assured this Tuesday that Kiev never intended to attack Belarus, calling on the neighboring country not to enter into an “absolutely shameful” war on the side of the Russian invader.

According to the Belarusian news agency Belta, the Ukrainian President reacted to the statements of the Belarusian counterpart, Alexander Lukashenko, who suggested that Ukraine continues to train “military personnel and extremists”, while “suggesting the signing of a non-aggression pact” .

“We have no intention of attacking Belarus. This is the main signal that all Ukrainian people send to the Belarusian people”, said Zelensky, who appealed to the neighboring country “not to lose independence” .

Zelensky urged the Belarusian authorities to “respect Ukraine” and to prevent military personnel from third countries – in an allusion to Russia – from entering Ukrainian territory, according to the Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform.

At Ukrainian officials have recently warned of the possibility of Russia launching a ground offensive through Belarus, although they have ruled out that the Belarusian army itself is involved..

The military offensive launched on February 24, 2022 by Russia in Ukraine has so far caused the flight of more than 14 million people – 6.5 million internally displaced and almost eight million to European countries -, according to the latest data from the UN, which classifies this refugee crisis as the worst in Europe since the Second World War (1939-1945).

At the moment, 17.7 million Ukrainians are in need of humanitarian aid and 9.3 million are in need of food aid and shelter.

The invasion, justified by the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, with the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security, was condemned by the international community in general, which has responded by sending arms to Minsk and imposing political and economic sanctions on Moscow.

The UN presented as confirmed since the beginning of the war 7,068 dead civilians and 11,415 wounded, underlining that these numbers are far below the real ones.
