The National Security Council of Ukraine imposed sanctions against 22 representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church. Corresponding decree signed President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.
“The decision of the National Security and Defense Council concerns our spiritual independence, which we are strengthening and will continue to strengthen. Sanctions have been imposed against 22 people – citizens of Russia, who, under the guise of spirituality, support terror and genocidal policies, – declared President in a video message on the results of the 334th day of the war.
The list of sanctions included:
- Metropolitan Hilarion (Alfeev) of Budapest and Hungary
- Deputy Head of the Synodal Department for Church Relations with Society and the Media Vakhtang Kipshidze,
- Adviser to the Patriarch, Archpriest Nikolai Balashov,
- Metropolitan of Vladimir and Suzdal Tikhon (Emelyanov),
- Vladimir Legoyda, head of the Synodal Department for Church Relations with Society and the Media of the Moscow Patriarchate,
- Metropolitan Anthony (Sevryuk) of Volokolamsk, head of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate.
In addition to them, the representative of the Russian Orthodox Church at the World Council of Churches in Geneva, Mikhail Gundyaev, who is the nephew of Patriarch Kirill, as well as the chairman of the Pentecostal Russian United Union of Evangelical Christians Sergey Ryakhovsky, fell under the sanctions.
The sanctions provide for the blocking of personal assets and funds that they could dispose of through third parties. Sanctions were imposed against most of the people on the list for five years, against six people – for 30 years.
Since the beginning of 2023, Ukraine has already imposed sanctions against Russian citizens twice. On January 7, restrictions were imposed against 119 Russian public figures, including artists Philip Kirkorov, Valeria, Basta, Yevgeny Petrosyan, Leonid Yakubovich. On January 15, another 198 people were sanctioned, including director Andrei Konchalovsky, actor Yegor Beroev, former host of the Good Night, Kids program Angelina Vovk, singer Yuri Loza, blogger and translator Dmitry Puchkov (known as Goblin), sports commentator Dmitry Guberniev and Semyon Pegov, head of the WarGonzo project.
Ukrainian sanctions against the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill operate from October 2022.
