These two seemingly innocent habits can harm your hair

Habits are certain actions that are performed automatically, without thinking about them. We just feel the impulse and action occurs. There are a lot of habits that seem insignificant, but they can have a negative impact on the condition of the strands. Two activities that we most often do without realizing it can be particularly harmful: playing with our hair and touching the scalp frequently.

The first habit, i.e. touching, pulling or twisting hair, can weaken them and make them more vulnerable to mechanical damage. After a long time of such treatment, the hair becomes brittle and the ends start to split. If we get used to touching or scratching our heads often, we transfer sebum from the skin to further parts of the hair, which makes it greasy faster. This can also lead to the transfer of microbes that cause inflammation from the fingers to the head. And it is not difficult at all when scratching will damage the epidermis. In severe cases, it can even lead to hair loss.

It is worth taking the above information to heart, because it has been known for a long time that hair is easy to damage, but it is much more difficult to rebuild it.

When do we deal with a disorder?

You can fight your habits on your own, but nervous scratching of the head when stressed or focused can be, for example, a symptom of dermatillomania, which is an obsessive-compulsive disorder. Its symptoms include notorious scratching on the head (or elsewhere on the body), picking at the skin, pinching, which leave hard-to-heal damage and permanent scars.

Trichotillomania, on the other hand, is another disorder that involves the uncontrollable plucking of hair from the head or other parts of the body. Constantly removing them can result in damage to the hair follicles, so that the hair may no longer grow back.

Both disorders can be treated with cognitive behavioral therapy and the use of individually selected medications.
