The district teachers’ strikes continue and, this Tuesday, the protest takes place in Coimbra. In the city of students, a meeting is scheduled in Praça 8 de Maio, at 11:00 am.
There are protests at several schools in the district. At the primary and secondary school Quinta das Flores, in Coimbra, teachers are already demonstrating at the door of the educational establishment. They will then march to the rally organized by the unions.
In some areas, officials are also expected to join the demonstrations, meaning that classes may not be held in several schools. Several students show support for teachers.
The teachers maintain the protest due to the stalemate in the negotiations between the unions and the Ministry of Education. Teachers consider the proposals presented insufficient. For now, a new round of negotiations is not scheduled.
“Teachers lack a lot of respect for the profession, which is one of the most important and to which society in general and the Government in particular seems unimportant”, complains a teacher. “The school is fundamental and without educated citizens we do nothing.”
Teachers organize protests in Cascais in Pinhal Novo
About fifty teachers are protesting at the Cidadela primary and secondary school, in Cascais, to demand respect for the Ministry of Education. In Pinhal Novo, Palmela, teachers hold a march and demonstration in Independence square.
Teachers complain that they are not being heard by the Government and ask the Minister of Education to negotiate “seriously”.
“The proposals presented are illusions. The minister is an illusionist who plays with words, but that is a handful of nothing. And as long as it’s a handful of nothing, we have to be in the fight, show our indignation”, says a teacher in a protest in Pinhal Novo.
Teachers demand the recovery of service time, the creation of new educational policies and changes in teacher evaluation.
