Seven people died during new mass shootings in the state of California, in United States. The episodes occurred in agricultural establishments, for firing firearms in two events that were linked. This is the third shooting to occur in California in the last eight days.
This Tuesday the alleged perpetrator of the shots was detained in his car when he was in the parking lot of a police station, a police officer reported. “Zhao was taken into custody without incident and a semi-automatic handgun was found in his vehicle,” San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus said on Twitter.
California authorities have identified the alleged perpetrator of the shootings at two farms that killed seven people as Chunli Zhao, 67 years old. Corpus said Zhao then went to a Half Moon Bay police station, where ABC7 television captured dramatic footage of his arrest as he was thrown to the ground by armed officers.
“The suspect is in custody. There is no ongoing threat to the community at this time,” the sheriff remarked. According to reports, the victims were Chinese farm workers and Zhao had worked on one of the farms.
Democratic Party senators introduced a bill Monday to make it harder to access assault rifles. The President Joe Bidenbefore the cataract of events that has been crossing the country, called for Congress to approve the bill which contemplates raising the minimum age to buy this type of weapons to 21 years.
“We know that the scourge of gun violence in America calls for stronger action. Once again, I urge both houses of Congress to act quickly…and take action to keep communities, schools, places of work safe, American jobs and homes,” Biden said in a statement.
The law banning assault rifles expired in 2004 and Congress did not renew it due to lack of bipartisan agreement, despite the fact that the country suffered repeated mass shootings. Many Republicans oppose the ban, citing the constitutional right to own guns.
On Saturday, just 48 hours earlier, 11 people were killed by an armed Asian septuagenarian in a dance hall near Los Angeles. The shooter after fleeing committed suicide. Meanwhile, the police investigate the reasons for the massacre that occurred during the Lunar New Year celebration in Monterey Park.
He allegedly believed that other instructors were saying “bad things about him,” according to a friend who did not give his name to CNN. He is believed to have arrived at the studio around 10:20 p.m. on Saturday and opened fire inside, killing 10 people – five men and five women, all between their 50s and 60s – and wounding 10 more.
He then apparently drove to another dance hall in nearby Alhambra, where authorities believe he intended to carry out a second massacre, but was stopped by a 26-year-old employee who took his gun. Security camera footage obtained by ABC television shows a couple struggling in the lobby to stop him.
“By his body language, his facial expression, his eyes, he was looking for people,” he told the The New York Times the young man who disarmed him. The suspect fled. He then shot himself in a white pickup truck in Torrance, several miles to the south, on Sunday afternoon as authorities were preparing to arrest him.
In addition, six other people, including a teenage mother and her baby, were killed in a shooting at a home in California’s Central Valley on January 16. “Tragedy after tragedy,” California Governor Gavin Newsom lamented Mondaywho was in Monterey Park.
