Sendinblue, not yet a unicorn of customer relations, but a centaur

President Macron has set the ambition of reaching the number of 100 French unicorns by 2030. This is ambitious for a State which counted 25 a year earlier – a figure that has since been increased to 27.

Sendinblue, which is already on the Next40, could contribute to presidential ambitions and its fascination with unicorns. In the meantime, the French publisher can claim Centaur status.

Revenues driven by takeovers and the offer of solutions

Indeed, valuation is no longer the only criterion for evaluating the potential of a startup. Investors are looking closely at annual recurring revenue. And on this parameter, Sendinblue has therefore exceeded, for its 10 years, ARR’s 100 million dollars.

By crossing this threshold, the SaaS publisher rises to the rank of Centaur. Several levers allowed it to grow to this level of cloud revenue. First, there is the Covid crisis and its effects in terms of digitalisation, in particular of VSEs-SMEs.

And to take advantage of this dynamic, Sendinblue has also greatly diversified its software offer. Launched in 2012, the company initially offered services focused on e-mailing.

Since 2019, its catalog has expanded to provide all the tools of digital marketing, with a strong focus on VSEs/SMEs. The strategy convinces investors and Sendinblue raises 140 million euros in 2020.

A scale-up that dreams of being a unicorn

Questioned a year later by, in March 2021, the publisher showed an annual growth of 60%. He also claimed 180,000 customers worldwide, 90% of which were SMEs with fewer than 50 employees.

In 2022, Sendinblue continues its momentum by multiplying acquisitions. Having become a “scale-up”, and tipped as a future unicorn, the French company closed last March with MeetFox, its fourth acquisition in less than a year.

Sendinblue’s strategy is clear: to become a key player in the digital marketing market, where global giants like Salesforce are nevertheless evolving. The new French centaur still has to gallop to join the American stallion.
