Sánchez says that Spain "win battles in Brussels" compared to what governments did "submissive" of the PP

Pedro Sánchez has returned this Tuesday to the Congress of Deputies. He has done so at his own request, in an extraordinary plenary session to report on the last European Council and other issues such as the measures adopted by the Government to deal with the economic and social consequences of the war in Ukraine.

In an initial speech of a little less than an hour, the head of the Executive has puffed up the role of Spain abroad. “It is not about knowing languages, but about fighting the battle in Brussels and winning it. Unlike what happened 10 years ago when we only imported bailouts and cuts to our welfare state, “he reproached.

At all times Sánchez has avoided making reference to recent controversies such as the perverse effect of the law of only yes is yes or the reforms of the Penal Code. Instead, he has placed the emphasis above all on the economy and his cabinet’s response to the inflationary crisis, with issues such as intervention in the electricity market with the cap on gas.

Throughout his speech, the socialist leader has contrasted a model in favor of the “social majority” against the “neoliberal” recipe of the PP. Thus he has defended that “the response to the financial crisis broke public confidence in the European project”. Now, the Government advocates “a fair response.”

In his opinion, in this crisis the Executive has put “all the resources of the State at the service of the majority and not the other way around.” “Much less at the service of a powerful minority while the majority of the people are condemned to every man for themselves,” he stressed in a veiled criticism of the main opposition party.

Criticism of energy

In the economic field, the president has puffed up the data on unemployment, inflation and GDP growth. Although, he has asserted: “We still have a lot to do. We are not satisfied, but I believe that the results are there and certify the success or effectiveness of our responses and encourages us to continue on this path.”

As has been customary since the Debate on the State of the Nation in June, Sánchez has charged against the economic sectors that “have benefited from this crisis”, alluding to the energy sectors. And it is that, he has assured, the Iberian exception promoted by the Executive has served to reduce the “price of electricity in the wholesale market” up to 20% despite the opposition of the electrical multinationals.

As he has expressed, the measures approved in recent months “unite Spain”. “And they unite it in a different way from what some proclaim from different squares in Madrid and who believe they have the exclusivity of the Constitution and patriotism,” he remarked to criticize the recent demonstration called by civil associations in Madrid’s Plaza de Cibeles since which was attended by leaders of the PP, Vox and Ciudadanos.

He has precisely ended his initial intervention by pointing out those who “have a reactionary discourse that seeks to go back to a black and white era”. “You will never achieve it. The rights won are not questioned: they are defended, abided by and exercised. If due to fear or electoral calculations your legs tremble to defend rights, I tell you that the Government’s hand will not tremble “, has stated.
